Read, reflect, and return to a devotional

Choose a reading style, keep your notes, and finish with something to carry forward.

In this guide

Pick up where you are

Open your current devotional from Today, or choose an existing one from your devotional library. You do not need to generate another devotional to keep reading or add to your reflections. Reading saved devotionals and writing your own responses do not use Glean credits.

On iPhone, you can change the reading presentation. Page presents the selected part of the devotional, Focus walks through Scripture and questions one step at a time, and Reader gives you a continuous reading view. Choose the style that makes it easiest to give your attention to the words.

Read the passage and make space to respond

  1. Open a Scripture reference to read the passage.
  2. Move through the devotional’s reflection questions. In Focus, use the previous and next controls to move between steps.
  3. Write your response beside a question. Use the expanded note editor when you want more room.
  4. Pause whenever you need. Return to the same devotional rather than starting over.

Your reflection does not need to be polished. A sentence, a question you are still considering, or one practical next step can be enough. The app’s completion state is a way to organize your library, not a judgment about the quality of your attention.

Adjust a prompt or complete your practice

If an eligible Scripture selection or question is not helpful, the devotional’s actions offer regeneration. You can provide instructions about what you would like changed. This is a new AI request, so review the applicable route and cost before continuing. Simply rereading the passage or editing your own reflection is different from asking AI to generate new material.

When you are ready, choose Complete devotional or Mark devotional complete, depending on the reading view. The completion screen asks what you gleaned and gives you space to record something to carry forward. Completed devotionals can be revisited from the Devotionals tab. To find them in Journey, open Today and tap View all beside Your Journey.

Keep a copy or continue in prayer

The devotional’s actions include Export, with options for devotional Markdown, journal Markdown, and a backup JSON file. Choose the format that fits what you want to keep. Exported journal files can contain personal writing, so choose their destination carefully.

You may also see Suggest prayer. Review and edit the suggested wording before creating a prayer from it; a suggestion is not automatically a message to another person. For moving your devotional between your own devices, see account and sync. For remembering your completed reflections alongside other entries, see monthly Memories.
